I am starting a new project - a diorama of a small boatshop. It will be loosely based on a real boatshop like this:
It's not my intention to exactly match the above - that's just my inspiration. There will be a 16 foot skiff under construction. Nothing behind the door or windows - they'll be blacked out. I've never done a diorama before other than the kit of Dora Bella I did many years ago, so it should be an interesting experience and I expect to learn a few new things. I really enjoy making small tools and other details, so it should be fun as well. Scale will be 1:16. The building will be about 17" wide and 11" tall. The deck under the shed roof about 8-1/2" deep.
I got started this past weekend making the base board and back board. Got some planks cut out for the siding and have started framing in and planking the facade of the building. I'm using a spare pine board I found out in one of my sheds for most of the construction although the baseboard and backboard are 1/2" plywood.

The facade and deck are planked with battens between the boards on the facade and are stained. Spent three days working on the windows and door. Started the workbenches late this afternoon. They still need to be stained. Haven't decided yet if they will have a shelf underneath.

The major construction is done now although nothing is glued down to the deck yet. At this point, I can start in on making all the little details.

The boatyard is on a bit of a hiatus right now. Yard work season is here and I've put the boys to work outside. They are kind of slow and there's a lot to do, so there won't be much progress here for a while.Once things heat up out there, they'll be begging to come back in.

Yardwork has slowed down some, so I'm back to modeling. I actually built another model since I quit working on the boatshop. It's a Smith Island Power Skiff. As soon as I finished that, I wanted to get back to the boatshop. I don't think it will take too long to finish. That said, it took the better part of two days to make the signs and the vise on the workbend and, yes - it really works. Fun little project. More details to come.

After I'd finished my yard work, I decided to build a draketail model. That project went quite quickly - just two months. I have more yard work to do, but I was still in the mood to work in the boatyard. I'll be making some fun details for the boatshop when I can. So, today I made a little saw and some paint cans. Looks like Earl needs to get that saw sharpened!

Fun and games for the feeble-minded. Today I made a plane and a brace & bit.
Oh, and no, I didn't make the penny. :-)

Okay - today it was a claw hammer, pry bar, and oar, and a small sledge hammer.

This has been an on-again, off-again type project. As of today, at least, I'm doing a bit more work, hoping that I'll finish this time. Today I made a C-clamp and a paintbrush. Earl is a pretty messy painter, I'm afraid.

Marathon day in the boatyard. I made a grapple-style anchor, a cat and a mouse, a door lock and key, a bushel basket (for the cat to sleep in, a try square, a donut, and a few other odds and ends. Got everything glued down as well. I'd say this is pretty well done. I might think of something else to put in there, but this will do for now.
