This Midwest Lobster Smack makes a great starter kit. It was fairly easy to
build but it allowed me to learn a lot of the basic skills I'd use with subsequent
models. It taught me how to follow instructions, how to shape and glue wood,
how to form metal, how to paint, how to rig, and many other things.
Making sails for it probably wouldn't have been that difficult but I just didn't want to tackle that with a first model. It looks fine without one I think.
