Armed Virginia Sloop

Completed Model
Completed Model - med - lrg
I started this Model Shipways kit in April, 2003 and completed it in early February, 2004. There were several weeks where I didn't work on the boat at all, so I'd have to say it took between 7 and 8 months to complete. This was my first square-rigged model, the first with cannons, and the second with sails I sewed myself.

Although Model Shipways bills this as an Entry Level kit, I have to disagree. If you compare this kit to a Midwest Level 2 kit, you'll find a great deal of difference. This would be quite challenging to an absolute beginner. If, however, you have a couple of kits already built and you're looking for a nice model as an entry to larger square-rigged ships, this is a great choice. The instructions are very good and, with the addition of Clay Feldman's text on building the scratch-built version (CD available from Ships in Scale magazine), you can build a very nice model. I also wrote a 5-part series of articles on building this kit that you are welcome to download.

If you'd like to see photos of the model being built, please go to the construction page. If you ever find yourself in Fredericksburg, VA, you can view the real thing in the museum at Historic Kenmore.

I have included three sizes of images of the finished model. On this page are thumbnails. If you click on the "med" link under each thumbnail, a 700x525 pixel image (around 50KB in size on average) will open in a new window. If you click on the "lrg" link, a 2272x1704 pixel image will open in a new window. These large images range in size from about 200 KB to 400 KB, so they will be slow to download on a dialup connection. If, however, you are building this model, you may find these large, close-up images useful.
